JOIN US FOR THE 35TH ANNUAL MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES CONFERENCE
2 - 5 SEPTEMBER 2025
ROYAL INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTRE -BRISBANE
In 2050 there is universal mental wellbeing. The population is resilient and early intervention in the development of mental ill-health is routine. Support services are integrated across health, welfare, housing, disability, employment and justice. Service delivery is highly personalised and embraces both traditional and contemporary healing methods.
People can exercise choice, and they experience their support as holistic, skilled, culturally aligned, highly respectful and fundamentally kind. The ‘mental health system’ is broadly defined, well-resourced and operates within a wellbeing paradigm. Government policy and performance is primarily judged against the wellbeing of the entire population.
Most people have their mental health support needs met through, and in, their community of choice, and where professional support is required, it is almost exclusively delivered at home, or a place chosen by the recipient. Access to, and support from, others who can draw on their lived experience is a valued and common option. Whilst there are many options for short term respite, it is rare for someone to be hospitalised. In this area, Australia and New Zealand lead the world.
People experiencing mental ill-health are not discriminated against nor socially excluded. People are socially connected. Stigma and shame are a thing of the past. Those with a lived and learned expertise work collaboratively and the lived experience of those who require support informs policy, provides leadership and shapes the system culture. Experiencing mental ill-health or psychological distress is no longer a barrier to good health, citizenship or full economic participation. Everyone who wants it has a place called home, meaningful employment, loving relationships and social connection.
What will the world be like in 2050 and what will the impact of these changes be on our mental health. This conference will explore how the world might evolve and what we need to do to consolidate the things we already do, and the new things we need to do to reach towards this utopian vision of an ideal mental health system.
Together, we will explore these questions and the potential for this vision by engaging with the bold and improbable ideas needed to move us to action.
