Stages of Empathy: Inclusion Benefits Everyone
Abstract
Stages of Empathy is a free, theatre-based training program designed to help community groups—including arts organisations, sports clubs and hobby groups—become more inclusive for autistic people and those with intellectual or psychosocial disabilities. Developed by Rebus Theatre and funded by the Department of Social Services, the program uses Forum Theatre to bridge the gap between good will, policy and practice. Real-world scenarios drawn from lived experience are performed by disabled actors, then re-enacted with audience intervention to explore inclusive responses and better outcomes. This immersive format generates dialogue, empathy and practical solutions to accessibility challenges in community settings.
The project has been shaped through consultations with disabled people and community organisations across the ACT and NSW. Touring across NSW, VIC and the ACT in 2025, this innovative model supports lasting organisational change through experiential learning, fostering environments where all people feel seen, safe and empowered.
