Consumers and Nurses: Sharing the Knowledge to Strengthen Recovery
Abstract
This workshop examines the knowledge and skills that consumers and nurses share in working with consumers and families in their Recovery. It draws on the ideas and ideals of the preliminary Kellehear Theory-Practice Integration Model (the Model). A preliminary study of mental health nurses supports the proposed Model as a person-centred, holistic model of care that supports the principles and ideals of Recovery. The Model presents a template that links the therapies and interventions with the theories that serve to explain and provide justification for their use.
Douglas Holmes has collaborated with Kevin Kellehear in this research study and questions the usefulness of the Model for consumer and peer workers. This workshop invites consumer and peer workers to examine the proposed Model and assess its usefulness and relevance to their work with consumers. It questions whether nurses and consumer and peer workers are “on the same page”.
Mental health nurses and consumer and peer workers need to share the same ideas and ideals in their work. Shared understandings and collaboration create strength and provide better outcomes for consumers and greater sense of satisfaction. This workshop provides the opportunity to examine participants to reflect on and examine their own approaches to helping and to determine whether we can translate this proposed Model of best practice into a shared, collaborative and realistic practice with benefits for all.
